Bluetooth 2.2 in mid-2009?

December 5th, 2008 | No Comments | Posted in Uncategorized

The Bluetooth wireless protocol standard has revolutionized connectivity between a vast variety of devices, and it is virtual omni-present in most of todays devices. Before Bluetooth was available most of the times you wanted to connect your mobile phone to your PC or laptop you needed a cable, the same goes for hands-free sets, which you can you now use without a cable.

The new Bluetooth 2.2 version which is rumored to be available as early as the middle part of next year, will be also known as Bluetooth 10x (when working in tandem with WiFi) or Bluetooth 100x (when working with UMB or Ultra-Wideband devices) for vastly superior transfer speeds. The current Bluetooth spec is capable of 1mb/s transfer speeds, there’s no official word on the speeds of the new 2.2 spec, but it should be a lot faster.

With the higher transfer speeds of Bluetooth 2.2 a wider variety of tasks will become easier to achieve, like high quality audio/video streaming, and much larger file transfers. It is also rumored that this new spec will open up the door for Bluetooth viruses, either way the wait until we find out shouldn’t be long.
